Patellar Tendonitis is most often due to overuse or repetitive injuries. Overuse of the quadriceps requires your patellar tendon to absorb the majority of impact forces. Basketball players, tennis players, volleyball players, track and field athletes, as well as soccer players are at the most risk because of the stresses to the patellar tendon.

Repetitive jumping creates micro-tears that can inflict pain and localized inflammation. Other causes of Patellar Tendonitis include:

  • Sudden, explosive thigh muscle contractions ( jumping, kicking or running)
  • Flat feet
  • Direct hit to the knee, kneecap or patellar tendon
  • Running down hills, or repetitive running
  • Inadequate strength and flexibility in your thigh and/or knee
  • Overuse of the patellar tendon and quadriceps thigh muscles
  • Stress from a sudden increase in frequency, intensity or duration of training

Signs of Patellar Tendonitis

While every individual responds different to injury and inflammation, Patellar Tendonitis symptoms usually include:

  • Crackling sound when the tendon is moved or touched
  • Pain and occasional loss of strength when bending the knee completely, squatting or kneeling
  • Pain, tenderness, swelling, warmth, or redness over the patellar tendon, just under the kneecap
  • Pain and occasional loss of strength when aggressively straightening the knee (like when jumping or rising from a seated or squatting position)

  • Find out if your muscles are balanced. Tendonitis can be caused by the unequal pull of muscles on your patellar tendon.
  • Protect the knee joint. If advised by one of our Spine Correction Center team members, protect your knee joint with taping, bracing, or a compression bandage during activity.
